HVAC marketing in Manitoba, read from the data

Manitoba has one of the longest heating seasons in southern Canada and a heating mix where electricity is far more common than elsewhere on the Prairies. Efficiency Manitoba's heat pump rebates make it a real two-product market: gas furnaces and heat pumps.

Manitoba is a cold-climate market with a twist. Winters are long and very cold, as across the Prairies, but a third of households heat mainly with electricity, and Efficiency Manitoba runs heat pump rebates that were open as of October 2026. For HVAC companies, that creates two distinct audiences, gas-heated and electric-heated homes, each needing its own pages and campaigns.

The competitive field

The answer first: fewer micro firms than anywhere else among the provinces.

Statistics Canada's June 2026 counts list 516 plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractor locations with employees in Manitoba and 350 without (Table 33-10-1174-01). By our calculation, 47.7% of the employer locations had one to four staff, the lowest share of any province, and 14.5% had 20 or more.

Our analysis: Winnipeg competition is shaped by established mid-sized firms. A newer or smaller company needs a specific angle, such as heat pump expertise, a clearly defined service area or a maintenance program, rather than trying to out-advertise larger rivals across the whole city.

Heating fuel

Natural gas was the primary heating energy for 52% of Manitoba households in 2023, and electricity for 33% (Table 38-10-0286-01).

Our analysis: electric-heated homes, which include furnaces, baseboards and electric boilers, are the natural audience for cold-climate heat pump marketing. Gas-heated homes remain the larger replacement market. Running both from one generic "heating" page wastes the difference.

Climate and seasonality

Manitoba's heating season is among the longest in southern Canada, and deep cold is routine.

That favours maintenance programs and early-season campaigns: homeowners who get a furnace checked in September are less likely to call a stranger in January. For heat pump marketing, the long, cold winter makes honest talk about cold-climate performance and backup heat essential. Buyers here ask about it, and vague claims lose trust.

Regulators to know

The Office of the Fire Commissioner issues electrician licences and administers permits and tradesperson licences under the Gas and Oil Burner Act. Programs, as of October 2026

Efficiency Manitoba's air source heat pump rebate offers $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate unit or $1,500 for ductless, in existing primary residences, with a $100 bonus for registered suppliers who include an F280 heat-load calculation before March 31, 2027. Manitoba was also the first province to reach a Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program agreement, announced on September 12, 2025 with nearly $30 million in federal funding delivered by Efficiency Manitoba, for no-cost retrofits for lower- and median-income households. The federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program took its last applications on July 31, 2026. Confirm all terms with the administrator before advertising.

What a Winnipeg owner should check first

Before spending on anything, look at the three or four firms that appear above you for "heat pump installation Winnipeg" and "furnace repair Winnipeg". Note their review counts, how recently they replied, and whether their sites mention the Efficiency Manitoba rebate with a date. In a market shaped by mid-sized companies, those details are often where a smaller firm can pull level within a season, because they depend on habit rather than budget.

How we would approach Manitoba

  1. Split the audience into gas-heated and electric-heated homes, with separate pages and ads. See content and SEO.
  2. Put the rebate where it helps, on heat pump pages, with the date checked and a link to Efficiency Manitoba.
  3. Start maintenance campaigns early, before the first hard frost.
  4. Benchmark the mid-sized competitors you actually meet in Winnipeg. See benchmarking.
