Quebec is unlike any other large HVAC market in Canada. Electricity heats most homes, Hydro-Québec runs an active grant program for heat pumps, and the RBQ licence is a visible marker of legitimacy. For HVAC companies, marketing in Quebec means French-first content, a focus on electric-heated homes and clear, current information about the grants buyers ask about.
The competitive field
The answer first: the second-largest field of employer firms in Canada, with relatively few owner-operators.
Statistics Canada's June 2026 counts list 2,983 plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractor locations with employees in Quebec and 1,401 without employees (Table 33-10-1174-01). By our calculation, 53.9% of the employer locations had one to four staff.
Our analysis: Quebec's ratio of non-employer to employer locations is about half Ontario's. That fits a market where licensing and certification requirements shape who can operate. Competitors are more likely to be established firms, so a strong, French-language online presence and visible credentials matter.
Heating fuel
Electricity was the primary heating energy for 70% of Quebec households in 2023, natural gas for 5% and wood for 4% (Table 38-10-0286-01).
Our analysis: the natural product here is the heat pump, sold against electric baseboards and electric furnaces on comfort, cooling and running cost. Gas furnace marketing has a small audience. Wood-heated rural homes are a niche with their own questions about backup heat.
Climate and seasonality
Snow and cold define a Quebec winter, and away from the St. Lawrence lowlands the heating season stretches even longer.
For marketing, heat pump interest builds before and after the coldest months, when homeowners are thinking about bills and summer comfort. Cold-climate performance is the central buyer concern, so content should explain it honestly. Emergency heating calls are fewer in an electric-heat market, which shifts the balance toward planned work and grant-driven projects.
Regulators to know
The Régie du bâtiment du Québec licenses contractors who carry out construction work for others, and the Commission de la construction du Québec manages competency certification for construction workers. Workplace safety falls to the CNESST, while consumer complaints go to the Office de la protection du consommateur. We link and summarise only; we do not give compliance or language-law advice.
Programs, as of October 2026
Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program offers grants for ENERGY STAR heat pumps and higher amounts for cold-climate units, along with geothermal systems and other measures. On its program page, Hydro-Québec refers to the coming federal rebate (expected in 2027) and states that it is still handling LogisVert requests as usual. Other provincial programs have closed or changed during 2026, so check Quebec.ca before naming any of them. Confirm every grant with the administrator before advertising it.
A note on bilingual sites
Many Quebec HVAC firms serve both French- and English-speaking customers, particularly around Montréal and Gatineau. Our approach is separate French and English pages for each service, rather than mixed-language pages, with French as the default. Google then has a clear page to show for each language, and customers read a page written for them rather than a translation squeezed beside the original.
How we would approach Quebec
- Write French-first, with English pages where your clientele needs them. See content and SEO.
- Make the heat pump the lead product, sold against electric baseboards on comfort and cost.
- Show the RBQ licence clearly on the website and profile, because buyers look for it.
- Date every grant mention and review it monthly. See reporting for how we track grant-driven enquiries.

Frequently asked questions
What heats most homes in Quebec?
Electricity. Statistics Canada data show 70% of Quebec households used electricity for their primary heating system in 2023, with natural gas at 5% and wood at 4%.
Which heat pump program can Quebec contractors promote?
Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program, which offers grants for ENERGY STAR and cold-climate heat pumps, among other measures, as of October 2026. Hydro-Québec says requests are being processed normally; confirm current amounts before advertising.
Does my HVAC marketing need to be in French?
For most of Quebec, yes. Most homeowners will expect to read and search in French, and Quebec has its own rules on the language of commerce. We plan French-first pages and campaigns, and suggest you confirm your obligations with the Office québécois de la langue française.
Who licenses HVAC contractors in Quebec?
The Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ). Contractors doing construction work for others need an RBQ licence in the correct subclasses. Our link is for orientation only.
